Hereās something I didnāt have on my Austin bingo card!
The Ayn Rand Institute is moving its operations from California to Austin, and it isnāt just renting an office.
The Institute has announced plans for a $30 million permanent Ayn Rand Center near the University of Texas, with an anticipated opening in 2028.
And theyāre thinking BIG.
The center is expected to include the Ayn Rand Archives, a museum about her life and work, a cafƩ, classrooms, studios and event spaces for lectures, conferences and educational programs. The facility will measure 27,144 SF and it is privately funded.
For those who recognize the name, Ayn Rand was the author of Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. Her philosophy of Objectivism emphasizes reason, individualism and the pursuit of oneās own happiness.
The new Austin center will also become the headquarters of the Ayn Rand Institute, which was founded in 1985.
Now, whether youāve read Ayn Rand, debated Ayn Rand, agreed with her, disagreed with her, or simply remember seeing Atlas Shrugged on a bookshelf somewhere, this is an interesting addition to Austin.
And I have to admitā¦ thereās something very Austin about putting a center dedicated to ideas, independent thinking and debate right next door to one of the stateās largest universities.
Austin has always attracted people with big ideas.
Apparently, we’re still doing that. š
