This past weekend, so much was going on. We paused to remember and honor the heroes whose lives were taken on September 11, 2001.
I still remember that morning so clearly. I was on my way to the office when Geno called and told me to turn around and come home. Like so many of us, that day changed the way I viewed the world forever. It was a rude awakening that made us realize how fragile life can be and how much we can take for granted.
Recently, I came across a quote by Corrie Ten Boom that stopped me:
“Today I know that such memories are the key not to the past, but to the future.”
I have been thinking about those words ever since.
We remember September 11 not simply to look backward, but to remember the courage, strength, compassion and selflessness that emerged from one of the darkest days in our history. We remember ordinary people who did extraordinary things. We remember those who ran toward danger while others were running away.
And perhaps that is what we are meant to carry forward.
Life will knock us down. Sometimes the circumstances are enormous. Other times, they are personal battles that no one else can see. But somewhere inside each of us is the ability to find our footing, gather our strength and keep moving forward.
Which brings me to something a little lighter…
After watching the Longhorns Saturday night, I couldn’t help but smile. They spent much of the game fumbling around, trying to find their rhythm and their direction. But they found their resolve, shed their timidness, stayed focused, fought their way back and just like that came away with the big win! 🏈🏈🤘🤘
Sometimes life feels a little like that.
We stumble. We get discouraged. We wonder if we have what it takes. And then something inside us says, keep going.
Maybe courage isn’t always about being fearless. Maybe it’s about finding the strength to take the next step even when we are afraid, uncertain or tired.
The memories we carry can remind us of what matters.
The people we honor can remind us of what is possible.
And the challenges we face can teach us just how much strength we have inside us.
So as we remember those we lost on September 11, perhaps the greatest way we can honor them is to keep living fully, to keep dreaming, learning, loving, helping, growing and making a difference.
Look beyond the front door. There is always something more to see, something more to learn and, sometimes, a little more courage waiting to be found.
