Cinco de Mayo is often mistaken for Mexican Independence Day (that’s in September!), but it honors the 1862 Battle of Puebla, when a smaller Mexican army pulled off an incredible win against the French. Today, it’s a vibrant celebration of Mexican culture, music, food, and yes… tequila! Since May 5 falls on a Monday this year, Austin is partying all weekend long. Here are 10 fun ways to join the fiesta:
♦La Fête de Cinco de Mayo – Saturday, May 3
Celebrate the cultural fusion of Mexico and France with family-friendly fun, mariachi, ballet folklórico, and local vendors at Mexic-Arte Museum. Free entry!
♦Hotel Vegas Weekend Bash – May 3 & 4
Dance all night to Latin beats, catch a Selena tribute, and indulge in tacos and drag brunch. It’s a two-day party with no cover! RSVP on Facebook Page.
♦Haymaker Austin – May 3–5
Three days of themed drinks, tasty bites, and live mariachi at this laid-back bar. No RSVP needed—just show up and enjoy.
♦Taquero Mucho – Sunday, May 4
Celebrate with $6 margs, $2 tequila shots, and $20 towers. Both downtown and Domain locations are getting the party started!
♦Drag Brunch at Cheer Up Charlie’s – Sunday, May 4
Two dazzling drag shows, Ballet Folklorico, and festive vibes all day long. Tickets start at $10.
♦Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Fiesta – May 4 & 5
Street tacos for $1, passionfruit margs, and a cumbia party? Yes, please! No reservations necessary.
♦Arriba Abajo Anniversary Bash – May 4 & 5
Celebrate Cinco and their one-year anniversary with live mariachi, flash tattoos, $1 tacos, and flavored tequila shots.
♦Manuel’s – Monday, May 5
This local favorite is celebrating with $3 off margs, new happy hour bites, and $2 off all cocktails from 3:30–6 pm.
♦Poolside Party at Hotel Viata – Monday, May 5
Tacos + tequila + poolside views = perfection. Grab food & drink tickets on-site and RSVP by email.
♦Otopia Rooftop Bash – Monday, May 5
Half-off frozen margs, skyline views, a DJ set, and a welcome cocktail with your $15 ticket. Fiesta starts at 7 pm!
However you choose to celebrate, enjoy the flavors, music, and spirit of Mexican culture this Cinco de Mayo weekend! Since Manuel’s is right by my office, I have a feeling I won’t be the only one sneaking out for margs with a few colleagues, cheers to Cinco de Mayo done right!
