Farewell to Joann Fabrics — But Creativity Lives On in Austin

It’s the end of an era—Joann Fabric and Craft stores are closing nationwide, including all three locations right here in Austin. Like many longtime crafters, I’m sad to see them go… but honestly, not surprised.

I popped in recently to grab some fluffy white fabric for a bridal shower project (think a dreamy chair draped in tulle!), and I couldn’t help but notice how quiet the store was. It made me wonder how much longer they could keep the lights on.

Still, it’s always bittersweet to watch a familiar brand fade away. But here’s the good news: Austin’s creative spirit is alive and well—and there are some incredible local spots just waiting to spark your next project.

If you’re missing Joann’s, why not try one of these vibrant, local alternatives?

Austin Creative Reuse | 2005 Wheless Lane
A treasure trove of secondhand art supplies—from paint and canvas to yarn and sewing notions—all at affordable prices. You might even stumble upon vintage film negatives, funky jewelry, or a quirky tripod.

Honey Bee Quilt Store | 9308 Anderson Mill Rd., Ste. #300
Quilters, rejoice! This cozy shop offers batting, pre-cuts, thread, patterns, and even quilting classes to keep your creativity buzzing.

Austin Sewing Machines and Quilting | 1601 S. I-35, Ste. #300 (Round Rock)
Need fabric? Thread? A new machine? This store has it all, plus hands-on classes for every skill level.

Hill Country Weavers | 4102 Menchaca Rd.
A fiber-lover’s dream. You’ll find stunning yarns, quality tools, thoughtful books, and a warm community atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile.

Sea of Beads | 2143 W. Anderson Lane
Dive into a rainbow of gemstones, seed beads, charms, and jewelry-making supplies. Bonus: Their loyalty program makes it even more tempting to return again and again.

The Paper + Craft Pantry | 1023 Springdale Rd., Ste. #6A
If journaling, card-making, or scrapbooking is your jam, this curated stationery boutique is pure joy. Think washi tape, fine pens, stickers, stamps—yes, please.

Armadillo Clay & Supplies | 3307 E. 4th St.
For the ceramic artists out there—this shop has everything from kilns and wheels to glazes and molds. It’s your one-stop studio supply shop.

I’ll admit—I used to sew a lot more, designing quirky outfits that were uniquely me. But between the rising cost of fabric and the time it takes, my sewing machine is now more nostalgic than practical. Still, crafting isn’t going anywhere. Painting, weaving, beading, pottery—these creative outlets are alive and thriving.

So while we say goodbye to Joann’s, let’s celebrate the local gems that continue to inspire artistry and keep Austin creative. Maybe it’s not the end… just a new beginning.

Let’s keep supporting local and sharing our creativity!
