"Living Local with Dorie Dillard: Real Estate, Business, & Events"

“Reale’s Italian Cafe: A Family Legacy of Authenticity and Resilience in Austin”

The formation of my most recent series, “Living Local with Dorie Dillard: Exploring Real Estate, Business, and Events,” was spurred by my participation in the Active Rain September Challenge, hosted by Dr. Paula McDonald and Kathy Streib.

Within this series, my second article introduces you to one of my favorite restaurants in NW Austin: Reale’s Italian Café. Whether you drop in for drinks with friends at the bar and catch a game on their large screens, or savor a cozy romantic dinner, you’ll always feel you’re home away from Rome!

Undoubtedly, the Reale family epitomizes resilience. Bob Reale, a true New York City native, embarked on a remarkable journey when he established this family-operated trattoria. With minimal funds, a heap of determination, four children, and his life’s greatest partner, Marie Reale, they laid the foundation for what would become Reale’s Italian Cafe.

Their pride in their heritage radiates through every aspect of their restaurant. Pouring their heart and soul into the business, Bob and Marie, along with their son Gino, and all their kids, (now some of the grandkids) consider it a privilege to work alongside one another. Beyond the restaurant’s commercial triumphs, the younger generations in the family have come to realize an invaluable bonus: the profound shaping of their character under the guidance of their patriarch.

Since its inception in 1981, Reale’s Italian Cafe has weathered numerous transformations. Yet, through every change, one steadfast commitment remained: serving authentic Italian cuisine. Their paramount concern is to not only earn but also maintain the trust of their patrons.

Their dedication extends to crafting a picturesque setting, perfect for romantic dinners or family gatherings. Reale’s has become the “go-to spot” in NW Austin for genuine Italian flavors. Their foresight led them to introduce al fresco dining with a covered patio long before it became a trend.

As someone who moved to Austin in 1981, I vividly recall hearing the consistent refrain, “You must try Reale’s; it’s the epitome of authenticity and a local gem.” Today, they have not only stood the test of time but also expanded into a thriving catering enterprise.

Recently, City Council member Mackenzie Kelly, representing District 6, had the privilege of bestowing a proclamation upon the Reale family. September 1, 2023, was declared “Bob Reale Day” in Austin. For over four decades, Reale’s Cafe has remained a cherished community cornerstone, filling both our hearts and stomachs.

So happy to see Bob Reale bestowed with this honor! Their story is yet another testament to the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives in Austin’s local landscape!
