Despite the historical presence of bats, panic and misinformation led many residents to petition for the eradication of the bat colony when thousands began inhabiting the bridge.

Merlin Tuttle and Bat Conservation International (BCI) played a pivotal role in enlightening the public about these gentle and astonishingly sophisticated creatures. These Mexican free-tailed bats contribute significantly to the ecosystem by consuming 10,000 to 20,000 pounds of insects, including agricultural pests, every night.
