u 1981: On Aug. 5, U.S. President Reagan fires thousands of striking air traffic controllers.

u 1971: On July 31, astronauts drive the first lunar rover on the surface of the Moon.

u 1930: Calvin Coolidge is sworn in U.S. president upon Herbert Hoover’s Aug. 3 death.

u 1892: Charles A. Wheeler receives a patent for the escalator on Aug. 2.

u 1861: The U.S. government first levies income tax Aug. 5 – 3% on earnings over $800.

u 1790: Completed Aug. 1, the first U.S. Census records a population of 3,929,214.

u 1774: Oxygen is successfully isolated Aug. 1 by Carl Wilhelm and Joseph Priestly.
