Evolution of Whole Foods in Austin

Whole Foods Market, now an iconic health foods grocer with a global presence, traces its roots back to Austin, where it all began. The journey of this renowned natural foods store is a fascinating tale of growth and innovation, with its flagship store standing tall at 525 N. Lamar Blvd., surrounded by notable establishments like Waterloo Records and Book People.

The story began in 1978 when John Mackey and Renee Lawson founded a small natural foods store in Austin, naming it SaferWay. Two years later, SaferWay merged with Clarksville Natural Grocery, owned by Craig Weller and Mark Skiles, to form the foundation of what we know today as Whole Foods. In 1980, with a modest staff of 19, Whole Foods opened its doors on the 900 block of North Lamar Boulevard, marking the beginning of its journey in Austin.

The early years were not without challenges. In 1981, just a year after its inception, the original store faced extensive damage during the devastating Memorial Day flooding. Nevertheless, the store persevered and reopened to continue serving its community.

As Whole Foods gained popularity, its expansion into other cities became inevitable. In 1984, Houston became the first city outside Austin to welcome a Whole Foods store. Subsequently, in 1988, the company acquired Whole Food Co. in New Orleans, marking its initial foray beyond the borders of Texas.

Whole Foods continued to thrive, and in 1992, it made a significant move by going public. The same year, it also acquired Bread and Circus, expanding its reach and offerings.

The 1990s and early 2000s were marked by further milestones. In 1993, the company experienced its first stock split, and in 2001, it opened its doors in New York City. International expansion followed in 2002 when a Whole Foods store welcomed customers in Toronto, Canada.

During this time, John Mackey’s visionary leadership garnered recognition, as he was named Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003.

The year 2005 saw Whole Foods move to its flagship location at West Sixth Street and North Lamar Boulevard, solidifying its presence in Austin. Notably, this store became famous for its rooftop ice skating rink during winter and a diverse array of local offerings throughout the year. The same year, Whole Foods made its debut on the prestigious Fortune 500 list, securing the 479th position.

International expansion continued with the opening of the United Kingdom flagship store in London in 2007. Additionally, Health magazine bestowed the title of “America’s healthiest grocery store” upon Whole Foods in 2008, acknowledging its commitment to promoting healthy living.

With a strong focus on innovation, Whole Foods received recognition as the National Retail Federation’s retail innovator of the year in 2012. Embracing the growing trend of online shopping, Whole Foods partnered with Instacart in 2014, becoming the first national grocer to do so.

In 2016, the company introduced 365 by Whole Foods Market, targeting a new market segment with the opening of its first store in Los Angeles. The following year brought a monumental shift when Amazon acquired Whole Foods in a landmark deal valued at $13.7 billion.

Today, Whole Foods stands as a testament to the power of vision, dedication, and a commitment to providing quality products to health-conscious consumers worldwide. Its humble beginnings in Austin have evolved into a global presence, with the flagship store serving as a reminder of its remarkable journey through the years.
