It’s hard to believe on the Bluebonnets are sprouting up so early in March. There is no question the warm weather we’re experiencing in Central Texas is leading the Bluebonnets to bloom early this year. But the rains have definitely helped push them to sprout!
In March 1901, 6 native species of Bluebonnets became classified as our Texas State flower. Texasproud.com tells the amazing story behind our Texas Bluebonnets.
According to Amy Medley, the lead horticulturist at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Bluebonnets pop up even earlier near city centers because of the radiant heat from the concrete, who knew?
Medley says it looks like peak bloom in Central Texas will be mid-March this year and last about a month! Usually the first of April we see the big show of blue fields. When the blooms come you will see families our along the roadside snapping family portraits and capturing scenic photos of field of our beloved Bluebonnets!!
Who knew that the rain in our fall helped the bluebonnets germinate? If we keep warming up the bluebonnet season could be shorter but if we cool down and get colder nights the season could be extended longer. In looking at the weather forecast we are expected to cool down next week.

I was surprised to learn that droughts like we had last summer can be advantageous for bluebonnets. According to Medley droughts can cause grasses to die back, opening up the soil for Bluebonnets, which are beneficial since they add nitrogen and enrich the soil for other plants.
