Today is the official day of the beginning of Chinese New Year, Sunday January 22nd, 2023 and culminates on February 5th, 2023.
The Lantern Festival will take place on February 5th and everyone, regardless of age or gender goes out in the streets to celebrate. It is the time for socializing and freedom. It is also a time reserved for families.
There’s more to the festival than lanterns. One important event is the Dragon dance which has a history almost as long as Chinese culture itself. My granddaughter, Beautiful Beckett, is in a Mandarin Chinese Immersion program in her elementary school and they put on a Dragon dance for her school. I wish I had footage of their performance.
This year is the year of the Rabbit, the fourth of all zodiac animals. Legend has it the Rabbit was proud-arrogant even of its speed. In Chinese culture, rabbits represent the moon. Others say it is because of the rabbit’s pure characteristics.
So much to learn and discover about this auspicious event. I’m excited my granddaughter is experiencing such diversity in her life involvements.
