Video Contest For Students in Austin ~ Turn Around Don’t Drown!

Austin’s City Watershed Protection Department is hosting a student video contest to promote safe driving and saving lives. It’s the first Flood Safety Awareness Video Contest for all Austin-area students in grades 6-12.

Driving through flooded roads in Austin is the leading cause of deaths during a flash flood. It not only put’s the drivers’ lives at risk, but also the lives of passengers and emergency responders. Believe it or not Austin is in the heart of Flash Flood Alley.

The plan is for the students to create their own short (30 second) public service announcement, educating drivers to “Turn Around Don’t Drown!” when they encounter water covering the road.

Videos can now be submitted through March 31st, so there is time to get your entry in. So what do the students win? Contest winners will receive a $100 gift card and other prizes and the top videos may be aired on local news stations.

They will announce one individual, one foreign language and one team winner in each of the following grade categories for a total of nine winners some time mid-April:

u 6-8th grades

u 9-10th grades

u 11-12th grades
