u 1972: On Jan. 9, ocean liner Queen Elizabeth is destroyed by fire in Hong Kong harbor.
u 1964: A Jan. 11 Surgeon General’s report classifies cigarettes as a definite health risk.
u 1943: On Jan. 12, the U.S. government decrees frankfurters be called “victory sausages.””
u 1902: “Popular Mechanics” publishes its first issue on Jan. 11.
