In Austin on Sunday I took Handsome Hudson and Beautiful Beckett along Hwy 360 (just past Spicewood Springs Road), to pick out a scruffy cedar tree! Why? To participate in an iconic tradition of picking a roadside tree and decorating it for the holidays! It’s a custom of spreading random acts of kindness along our highways that make passersby’s smile!! And it makes us smile as we decorate, stand back and admire our creation. Hudson and Beckett picked out a perfect lone cedar.

Austin isn’t the only place this happens! Jeff Dowler, CRS posted about the Holiday Trees in Carlsbad. I love the residents decorate the wizened old trees along the bluff above the beach.
It’s fun claiming an ordinary cedar tree growing wild by the road! Who takes the time to do this during the holidays? A wild assortment of people, that is who! Some are families, with small children or teens, couples and various groups of friends. All are taking time to dress these less than desired cedar trees to add a chuckle of joy as others pass by to see their masterpieces. It’s the idea of someone taking the time for others to enjoy a holiday expression with no thought of compensation, reward or even a donation box!
Some trees are carefully adorned with tinsel, garland & ornaments. Others are decorated less than perfect. This is so Austin! The philosophy of “Keep Austin Weird” is always alive!
Even with the chaotic lives we lead, people’s worry about the economy, inflation, layoffs and 401K’s dropping in value, it’s amazing what we learn from random acts of kindness. Maybe viewing the transformation of the unappreciated cedar tree will cause a lightbulb moment to carry it a step further and do something nice, without recognition for someone we know or someone in need; something that will benefit others.
Take a moment and drive by our lowly cedars festooned for Christmas by caring souls for your viewing pleasure. They are amazing!!
