There are so many activities going on in the fall! The weather is cooler and here in Austin we have some turning leaves but nothing like other parts of the country! We have extra time to sleep, and who doesn’t like to decorate for autumn festivities?
However moving into seasonal changes mean annual vulnerabilities. I want you to enjoy fall to the fullest and yet preparation needs to be done safely. Here are a few things to be on the lookout:
u Don’t forget to set your clocks back 1 h hour Sunday November 6th. Daylight saving time ends at 2 am.
u Check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide to make sure they are working properly.
Fall and winter is notorious for family gatherings which involves food! Keep everyone safe. Remember when to change the batteries when the time changes! When you change your clocks, change the batteries.
u Fry foods safely
Make sure meat is fully thawed and pat it dry before frying. (oil does not like water and this could result in more hot oil splatter!)
Don’t over fill the fryer/pan with oil- just use what you need
Make sure your fryer is placed on a flat surface and if a deep fryer: place on the ground at least 10 feet away from anything flammable
Keep pets and children away. Never leave the fryer unattended
u Wash your hands regularly
Don’t forget flu season is upon us with many other viral and respiratory illness
u Ladder safety
This is the time of year we are up on ladders with an assortment of DIY projects. Remember to be safe:
stay facing the step ladder
keep a firm grip on the ladder
don’t carry anything too heavy that may cause you to lose your balance (have an assistant)
maintain a 3 point contact with the ladder staying centered on the ladder, don’t put too much weight on either side
Enjoy fall and all it has to offer, just remember: Don’t learn safety by accidents and the best safety is your brain….use it!
