u 1959: Soviet Premier Nikita Khruschev is denied entry to Disneyland Sept. 19.

u 1955: Argentine President Juan Peron is ousted by his military Sept. 19.

u 1947: The Air Force is established as a separate U.S. military branch on Sept. 18.

u 1927: The Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) debuts Sept. 18 over 16 radio stations.

u 1862: The Emancipation Proclamation of Sept. 22 orders all slaves freed by Jan. 1, 1863.

u 1851: On Sept. 18, the first issue of the New York Times is published.

u 1806: After two years, the Lewis and Clark expedition returns Sept. 23 to St. Louis, MO.
