u 1921: With no speed limits, the Ayus Autobahn opens in Germany Sept. 10.

u 1901: President William McKinley is fatally shot Sept. 6 in Buffalo, NY. 

u 1776: On Sept. 9, Congress votes a name change to the “United States of America.”

u 1565: America’s oldest city, St. Augustine, FL, is established by the Spanish on Sept. 8.
