Thank you Austin PT50 for providing your annual “Thinkers and Doers Symposium.” Great morning listening to issues regarding Austin affordability and its changing landscape plus info from Austin Parks and Recreation.
A special treat included listening to Jessica Finnigan Director of Quality Assurance Engineering with Indeed, a growing Global Tech Company. She was one of the original 30 employees and they have rapidly expanded to over 7,400. They are the number #1 job site in the world with over 250 million unique visitors every month. Every day they connect millions of job seekers to new opportunities.
Austin has been studying other cities learning how they address affordability and the outcome produced 7 cross-cutting lessons from these case studies:
- 1. Act Early
- 2. Remove land from market pressures
- 3. Provide meaningful community engagement and invest in capacity building
- 4. Include anti-displacement strategies in city plans/investments
- 5. Adopt realistic expectations of success
- 6. Back strategies with $$
- 7. Commit for long haul
We listened to an enlightening presentation from the Austin Parks and Recreation and their vision for Austin’s Park system as we approach the centennial mark in 20128. As Austin continues to grow and change the long range goals involve engaging the community to provide citywide strategies and priorities to ensure a world class park system. Did you know we currently have 300+ parks and 18,600+ acres of parkland?
Real estate runs in our family which means sometimes I see my son and daughter at industry events. Good information to learn so we can share with clients and friends.
