Fusebox Festival was created in 2005 as Austin’s one of a kind platform for ground breaking performances, installations, events and workshops featuring artists from across the globe. They’ve come a long way with performances, parties, meals, discussions etc. celebrating the potential of the live situation. Artistically, the festival is rooted in liveness. Pondering and acting on what it means to be in a space with other people and what is possible, is what it’s all about.
The Long Center for the Performing Arts is always looking for high quality, innovative shows and the Fusebox Festival needs high-quality, flexible spaces. What a great coupling of two Austin art groups to partner for hosting a multi-media show, “Zvizdal: Chernobyl, So Far So Close” by Berlin. The Long Center offers 5 live performances: February 8 -10.
Berlin tries on the “experience” of live cinema through combining film, performance and sculptural art. In order to achieve this approach they build an environment with the audience on two sides and a screen in the middle. A camera takes images of three meticulously created models to splice into previously shot footage in the “live cinema.” You are watching a film, seeing each other and under the screen are the three models. How is that for mind blowing? This show is definitely for an audience of younger more progressive followers or those wanting to stay up on the unusual!
Rachel Watkins, assistant director of programing at the Long Center, is very excited about the show. She says “It’s a human story on survival. Even though it’s crazy, it’s also relatable. The interactive elements make it.” An interesting note is according to Watson “It’s not just a rental, we are co-presenting it.”
The Fusebox Festival has led to Fusebox being named one of the best performing arts festivals in the world.” Only in Austin….one more inspiring occasion to connect, dream and build community.
