Malibu Poke has recently opened in the Seaholm District located near downtown Austin. Poke has become popular here in Austin, and Malibu does it with a twist on this Hawaiian favorite. Owner John Alexis worked with Matt McCallister, a James Beard nominee, to create the mix and match style menu that uses sustainable sashimi-grade seafood and produce sourced from local farms. Traditional poke bowls are offered as well as unique offerings with a lot of fusion flavors like smoked curry and smoked bonito aioli. There are also intuitive touchscreen ordering kiosks where you can customize your poke bowl. If you’re a frequent visitor, there’s facial recognition software that is tied to your ordering history. While the self-ordering allows customers to easily make a bowl that fits in with their diet (there’s a cheat seat compatible with various diets including Paleo and vegan), employees are stationed nearby to help with unfamiliar ingredients and interface questions.
On Their Bowl menu, you will see Classic Tuna with malibu sauce, marinated cucumbers, edamame, red onion, micro radish, chili thread, chive oil and crispy shallot…and…Tropical Chimichurri Shrimp with scallion, carrot, mango, jicama and micro radish…and…Wasabi Ponzu Salmon with orange, daikon, wasabi tobiko, edamame, scallion, micro radish and arare. On the Your Bowl menu – you choose the protein like Ahi tuna, cooked shrimp or Atlantic salmon… your base like sushi rice, cauliflower rice or massaged kale…your sauce like spicy chili, coconut curry or garlic ginger…then add your toppings like avocado, micro basil, macadamia nuts, fresh chive, red onion or mango, or something crunchy like crispy garlic, toasted sesame and spiced peanut topped with your oil of choice like chili oil, bonito oil and sweet teriyaki.
