Have you heard about Canyon Creek Elementary’s WATCH D.O.G.S. program?

The Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is a national innovative program active in the Canyon Creek Elementary School. Please come Thursday, September 6th at 6 pm to the Canyon Creek Elementary cafeteria and learn about the group. There will be free pizza and drinks offered while you learn about this exceptional program!

It doesn’t surprise me in our Canyon Creek community that we would have a great response to this program.

We are experiencing violence in our schools across the country and this program is focusing on the prevention of violence in our schools by using the positive influence of fathers and father-figures. How does it work?

  1. Providing an unobtrusive fathering presence in schools
  2. Being a positive and active role model for students

In 1998 Jim Moore formed this WATCH D.O.G.S. a non-profit organization across America immediately after the Jonesboro, Arkansas, middle school shooting tragedy. There motto is simple and states their objective succinctly: “To turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers.” It’s like a two way street.

Fathers, grandfathers, uncles and any other father-figure can become a WatchDog at an official Watchdog school. They can volunteer for a minimum of one day each year. They can read and work on flash cards with kids, play at recess, eat lunch with their child, watch the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow, mentor students and actively engage with all children. It’s all about their presence which offers additional security at the school during the day. They will be wearing an official t-shit or vest so they can easily be identified.

I’m so proud to see Canyon Creek Elementary have so many positive father-figures willing to make a commitment to help the school gain an extra set of eyes and ears. A positive role model is so important to our students. The value and benefits of committed father helps improve academic performance, self-esteem and social behavior.
