Suerte ~ "Foodie" Friday 8/3/18

I’ve a unique spot for you to dine this week-end if you’re in the mood for Mexican. Pulling up to this restaurant, you’ll think you’ve been transported to the streets of Mexico and you never left East Austin! Have fun and enjoy the sights, sounds and flavors of truly wonderful food and authentic ambiance.

SUERTE                             https://www.suerteatx.com/

The front door of this East Austin restaurant on E. 6th St. designed by local artist Aaron Michalovic will immediately catch your eye.  It features kind of a burst design with fanned layers of a dusty agave green, bubblegum pink and beautiful sky blue, the colors of Oaxaca Mexico’s famous center. There is a window near the door with the words “No guns, be cool. Have fun” written on it. The interior is decked out with a light colored wood and hand-woven pale pink and grey textiles from a street artist owner Sam Hellman-Mass met in Oaxaca. There are wicker light fixtures, fresh flowers everywhere and mezcal jugs stand in the corner. There’s a long bar with very heavy wooden & steel stools, and an assortment of tools & knick-knacks sitting on shelves. It truly is a beautiful restaurant, but, can get a little loud when the house is full so be prepared.  The impeccable service throughout the evening will make up for the lack of quiet conversation.

The backbone of Suerte’s menu is the masa that is created in-house by a process where corn is soaked & cooked, then hulled and ground into dough to make the staple of their tostadas, tamales, tlacoyos, tlayudas and tortillas.  Here is a sampling of their delicious menus…on the Snackcidents menu there’s Sweet Corn Esquites Con Fontina…Chips, Salsa y Caldera Cheddar… and Pork Cheek Molotes. On the Specialties menu there’s Chicken Roulade with mole negro and tortillas…Fish a la Devil with oak grilled, bacon veracruzana, onion escabeche, salsa guacamole and tortillas…and…Goat Shoulder Barbacoa with mint epazote rub, charred tomato salsa, queso fresco served with an herb salad, avocado and tortillas.  When it comes time for dessert, the Sweet Menu has If You Got It, Flan it made with a duck egg cashew custard and molasses crumble served with apricot orange sorbet…Chamomile Panna Cotta with a masa cookie, white chocolate meringue and peaches & berries…and…Chocolate Con Churros, a stone ground house made Mexican hot chocolate with marshmallow, almonds and spices.
