I’ve got a recommendation for a restaurant in one of Austin’s most sought after neighborhoods in East Austin. Watch the traffic because SXSW is going to be in full force but don’t let that deter you from this popular hotspot! Whether with a date, family or friends you’ll want to check this place out!

Old Thousand is an diverse mix of flavors, ingredients and styles. You’ll find modern interpretations of classic Chinese dishes in a comfortable, casual setting. There is plenty of Texas influence as evidenced in the honey and candied pecans that are mixed with a fried shrimp dish. There’s even brisket that is part of a version of fried rice that mixes with Chinese sausage. Their name Old Thousand is the address of the restaurant along with it being Chinese slang for a quick-witted gambler. The restaurant has a funky music playlist that will make you feel like you’ve walked into a party when you enter. There are banquette and booth seating available as well as intimate tables for dining.
A sampling of what you’ll find on their menu…For Starters you could try Cabbage Pickles, Crispy Wontons with shrimp, pork and pineapple sweet chili or Scallion Pancakes – a green onion pancake with Togarashi and sweet soy. On the Meat & Seafood menu there’s Orange Chicken with tarragon, kale chips and a citrus glaze…Mala Winter Pot with shrimp, roasted pork belly, kombu, wakame, lotus root and yuba. The Noodles & Rice menu has Brisket Fried Rice with Micklethwait brisket, Chinese sausage and jasmine rice…Cumin Beef with Lo Mein wheat noodles, anaheim pepper in a wok sauce and Nai Nai’s Congee with a chicken and rice porridge with seasonal greens. For dessert try the 5 Spice Doughnut with Pandan cream or the Oolong Cream with smoked meringue and blackberry.
