Thankful for my little boy who’s grown into a loving man

Thank you Debbie Reynolds for this Thanksgiving challenge! This is my #4 entry.

I’ve always loved the saying “Raising boys is an honor and adventure!” not sure who said it but that is the way I feel about my son John. He was in a hurry to be born as I drove to the hospital (only 5 minutes away) not even taking time to put my convertible top up! I arrived and 35 minutes later the most precious little boy emerged to greet me!

John was a happy, inquisitive child who loved running, playing, swimming and biking and SWIMMING….did I say swimming? He is ACDC (just watch him make a sandwich), determined, loyal, honorable and lives a purpose driven life with integrity.

John loved swimming and swam for Texas Aquatics swimming club through out junior high and high school. Virtually every day he and his team swam nine miles every day: 160 laps in the morning and again late in the afternoon. They formed a strong bond between each other and their coach and to this day are still are friends raising their families together.

John swam for Clemson on a scholarship and is a diehard fan! He continues to run, marathons (last year qualifying and running in the Boston Marathon). He has competed in 2 Ironman competitions and now makes sure his 2 children (Hudson 5 and Beckett 3) are swimmers and run in the kid’s marathon group here in Austin.

He is blessed to share his life with his soul mate and is a devoted husband and father to his 2 adorable children. He is a true friend and an exceptional business man, who owns his own real estate company. Am I prejudiced? Maybe but I’ll bet the same descriptive words are said by all who know him.

I received a card one year for my birthday and saved it and often read the words that mean so much to me:

Mom ~

All through my life,

I’ve known I could turn to you

To help me

Think things through

Or figure out

Just what direction was right for me.

With your steady patience,

Love and understanding,

You’ve not only listened

And shared your advice,

But you’ve always reminded me

To be true to myself,

My values, and my dreams.

From the guidance you’ve offered

To the confidence and wisdom

That you’ve built in me,

You’ve made me stronger than you know..

But never too strong to need

A little help from my mom.
