I love capers, especially on salmon, but never considered how they grew! While touring picturesque Taormina, Sicily one of the places our guide drove us to was Savoca. While walking up to visit the Church of Santa Lucia in the Sicilian hills he pointed out the the remains of old prisons where an opening of iron grates was visible. This was where family and friends could talk to the the prisoners but not see them. Long vines of capers grew out of the crevices all along the walls. I was amazed how many places they jutted out and hung, just begging to be picked.
