Check out the Texas Comptroller website to see what qualifies and read the fine print! The holiday theoretically applies only to “back to school” items, but the list of exempted items is extensive. This savings include items purchased online, by telephone, mail or even layaway plans! The savings is approximately $8 per $100 spent.
School in Austin starts August 22nd therefore many shoppers are looking this weekend to take advantage of the Sales Tax Weekend August 11th – August 13th!
The exemption applies to each eligible item that sells for less than $100, regardless of how many items are sold on the same invoice. You do not have to purchase items individually to get the exemption. If you have 6 shirts priced at $50 they will all receive the exemption.
The exemption does not apply to the first $99.99 of an otherwise eligible item that sells for more than $99.99. If you purchase a pair of slacks for $125 than the sales tax is due on the entire $125.
The categories included are:
- Clothing and Footwear
- Backpacks
- School supplies
Don’t forget the shopping savings is in effect as of today! Make sure you make it a point to have your list and take advantage of the savings this weekend!
