Frost, A Gelato Shoppe ~ "Foodie" Friday 8/11/17

We are in the heat of August in Texas and it doesn’t look like the hot weather is going away anytime soon. I’ve discovered another “cool” place in the Domain Northside in NW Austin with something that is sure to put a smile on your. Right across from  the Flower Child Restaurant on Rock Rose Ave. you’ll find this treasure of a place to cool off from our summer temperatures.

 FROST, A GELATO SHOPPE             https://www.frostgelato.com/

Gelato has often been referred to as “the world’s finest ice cream”.  If you’ve never tried it, you are definitely in for a treat.  Before getting into the wonderful flavors available, here’s a brief history on how gelato started.  Gelato and sorbet can actually be traced back to 3000 BC where Asian cultures served sorbet in the form of crushed ice and flavoring.  Years later, Egyptian pharaohs served visitors a cup of ice mixed with fruit juices.  Fast forward to Marco Polo who used the same techniques and brought them back to Italy.  It was the deep appreciation for fine food that the Italians have that caused them to transform Marco’s principles into a tasteful and elegant product.  In the 1500s many noble families used gelato and sorbet to cleanse their palates between courses, or as an after dinner indulgence.  By the early 1600s crushed ice mixed with fruit was sold in every public square in Italy. As Italians made their way to the USA, so did gelato.  It was finally introduced to the streets of NY by Giovanni Basiolo in the late 1700s.

Today Frost, A Gelato Shoppe, is writing a whole new chapter in history having brought the most authentic Italian gelato practices to the American market.  Their equipment, display cases and products are imported from Italy (except for milk, sugar and fruit).  It is made fresh daily in their stores.  Their gelateria allows them to create and produce fresh authentic Italian gelatos and sorbets every day.   Melchionda, their master gelato chef comes from Bologna, Italy and has been perfecting gelato recipes for over 30 years. Frost also serves sorbet, cakes, coffee and drinks. Some of the mouth-watering flavors of gelato that are available are: Coconut, Crema di Biscotti, Baileys Irish Cream and Bourbon Butter Pecan. Some of the sorbet flavors that are available are: Apricot, Canteloupe, Limoncello and Pear Riesling.
