The Goodnight family has quite a history in Texas starting with Charlie Goodnight who was a legendary cattle rancher and came to Texas when he was just nine years old. He hunted with the Caddo Indians at the age of 13, started a cattle business at 20 and served the Texas Rangers as a guide at the age of 24. By the age of 40 he blazed cattle trails almost 2,000 miles long and at the ripe old age of 60 he was recognized as possibly the greatest scientific breeder of range cattle in the west and was considered an international authority on the range industry at the age of 90. Charlie also invented the Chuck Wagon, the first restaurant cowboys knew when they were out on a cattle drive and that’s where the tradition of fine steaks began. The Goodnight family built a 20 seat coffee shop and restaurant on South Congress Avenue in 1947 and named it Hill’s Café. That Café is now an Austin staple.
This Texas style diner serves Texas favorites crispy buttermilk mushrooms served with ranch & Cajun remoulade and their Pork Rib Sampler with 3 of Hill’s pork spare ribs covered in their sweet BBQ sauce. They have delicious sandwiches like their Grilled Meatloaf Sandwich served with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles & spicy ketchup on Texas Toast; and their Buffalo Chicken Sandwich served as your choice of fried, blackened or grilled then tossed with hot pepper sauce and served with bleu cheese crumbles, lettuce, tomato & onions served on a sweet Kolache bun with a side of ranch. For a dinner plate, try some Pork & apples – a 6oz porch chop glazed with a ruby port wine sauce marinade served with Brussels sprouts & garlic mashed potatoes; or how about Chicken Fried Chicken – buttermilk battered chicken served with Idaho mashers & green beans with your choice of yella or white pepper gravy. Finish it all off with a slice of seasonal cobbler or pie and you’ll be one happy diner!
Hill’s Café has free live music with their Head for the Hill’s Free Music Fridays – could be Texas bluegrass, country, Americana or country rock bands appearing every Friday on their iconic stage.
