When your city is doing well there are always those who want to share unfavorable news. Recently job statistics reported the job market was slowing so jumped on Austin saying it was not on fire as so many reported. The job statistics were revised and guess what Austin’s numbers improved markedly! The revisions brought Austin to the nation’s No. 5 fastest growing major metro.
The revisions came from Austin’s Chamber’s VP/Research Beverly Kerr who analyzed the revised Austin payroll job numbers from the Texas Workforce Commission and US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Her findings show, in the past 12 months ending January 2017 the Austin area added 34,000 net new jobs! The growth is extraordinary at 3.5%, placing Austin as the 5th fastest growing metro among the 50 largest metros.
Texas cities were noted prominently showing exceptional numbers. Dallas ranked 2nd with 4.3%, Fort Worth ranked 12th with 3%, San Antonio ranked 20th with 2.6% and Houston ranked 48th with .3 %.
The past few months the Austin economic story has been one of moderating growth, based on inaccurate numbers. The record has been set straight now with correct numbers…the Debby Downers were proven to be wrong!
