Don’t forget Sunday March 5th, 2017 is the 88th annual Zilker Kite Festival (also known as the ABC Kite Fest). Right now the forecast is for rain but you know Texas just wait 10 minutes and the weather changes! There will be a rain date if the clouds are bursting on the 5th and it will move to March 12th. If weather on the 5th is rainy or otherwise iffy, call the Kite Fest hotline at 512-448-KITE (5438) for an update, or follow the event on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The decision will be posted by 9 AM Kite Day morning.
Booths open at 10 am and kite registration begins at 11 am. Kite events start at 1 pm with the festival closing at 5pm. It’s an all day family affair so make sure you plan on coming and take advantage of the festival offers! The price is right! Admission is free for everyone!
To find the festival head to Zilker Park just east of MoPac in the fields known as the Great Lawn, that are located between Barton Springs Rd (to the south) and Lady Bird Lake (to the north). Be advised Barton Springs Road will be closed from 7am to 7pm for the festival. There is limited parking in Zilker Park If you drive shuttles are an option or park for free downtown at the state lots at 1604 Colorado Street. Catch a shuttle down south at the Tony Burger Center for $5 for riders 12 years and up (kids under 12 and dogs ride free).
In case you didn’t know this is an Austin Favorite and is the oldest event of its kind in the country! It’s a great way to welcome spring so make sure you allow plenty of time to navigate the crowds and traffic. Everyone wants to get in on the action!
