Austin Chamber’s VP/Research Beverly Kerr Reports patent activity is a primary indicator of Austin’s climate for innovation.
It’s hard to believe 4,000 patents were awarded to Austin area inventors in 2016!! This number is 11.2% higher than in 2015. What is really is astounding is in 2016 Austin patents represents 30% of all patents granted to inventors throughout Texas. This continued achievement only reinforces Austin’s reputation for innovation.
Austin’s high tech industries are an important factor in our economy. We rely on these industries for our economic growth, exports and job creation and they are sustaining a competitive edge. Our numbers compared to cities around the US are shinning stars in the front of the pack. Patents per 10,000 populations puts Austin in #3 behind #1 Jan Jose and #2 San Francisco! Los Angeles is #13 and New York is #22.
So what companies are churning out patents from our Austin inventors?
The top four companies according to the US Patent Office are:
IBM with an astonishing 3,495
Dell Technologies with 1,002
Freescale with 904
AT&T with 820

Silicon Laboratories- 311, National Instruments – 274, AMD – 221, VIA Technologies – 171, Cirrus Logic- 156, Apple- 137 and Intel – 134
