Our weather promises to be warm, sunny with blue skies. This week’s Foodie recommendation is more than just a restaurant, it’s a destination in an historic neighborhood that you need to check out! It is known as “THE” place to go for anyone who wants to get their fix on all things creative and perpetuate the slogan “Keep Austin Weird! With a name like Spider House Cafe how can you go wrong on Halloween week-end!
SPIDER HOUSE CAFÉ https://spiderhouse.com/
The Spider House has been compared to a small carnival-village. A place where you can choose from an assortment of specialty coffee drinks and cocktails, fine crafted beer along with a selection of sandwiches, pizzas and satisfying snacks. The patio at Spider House has a variety of food and coffee trailers and even a tattoo shop!
Founder Conrad Bejarano had a vision to create a cultural gathering place for the community. As the site was being converted to what it is now, Conrad and his business partner John Dorgan were approached by a number of artists and musicians that wanted a unique space where they could perform their art. As a result, it’s become a venue that serves as a playground for artists, musicians and performers.
You’ll find a spectacle of Christmas lights twirling over statues, fountains and bathtubs on the patio; and into the café where the original wooden walls of this 1931 building are decorated with paintings, signs and records. It’s been named “one of the 10 best destinations in America” by USA today and an “Austin Institution” by the Washington Post. And, it’s been said that it’s haunted … Late at night after everyone has left, sounds have been heard, undisclosed phone messages have been left and random stacking and re-stacking of equipment has happened.
On their snack menu you’ll find Smothered Chili Cheese Fries garnished with pico and jalapenos along with Five And Dime Frito Pie that is served with chili, onions, cheddar cheese and sour cream. From the sandwich menu, you might like The Versace – pulled chicken, local goat cheese, bacon and tomato served on sourdough with pesto. Or, The Italian – made with capicola, soppressata and genoa salami with provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion served on an Italian sub roll with basil mayo, red wine vinaigrette and oregano. Tacos, pita pizzas and desserts finish out the menu.
