Austin Weirdness #8 ~ Push, Pull, Click…. Voila!

You have to love our slogan “Keep Austin Weird.” We have so many Austin traditions that bring a smile to your face. Austin had been named on many top lists and one that may not be our most prestigious accolade is Austin is named the fifth drunkest city! Austinites like to have fun and are always seeking “new and unusual” and yes we love “secret venues.” Not a word now…Hush..I’m going to spill the beans…..there are 6+ hidden bars in Austin! Don’t tell anyone….

Anyone who’s had more than a couple drinks are usually notoriously bad at keeping a secret. That’s why, it’s a miracle that hidden bars exist at all, but they do! Austin’s hidden bars are some of the finest watering homes in our city. It’s like a rite of passage, you have to discover these 6 and speculate if there is more….

Midnight Cowboy – Downtown

How to get in: Head to the speakeasy’s website to make a reservation, or check the sign to see if it’s illuminated, indicating walk-ins are welcome. Then ring the buzzer marked “Harry Craddock” for entry, and get ready to enjoy a damn good drink.

Continental Club Gallery – South Congress

How to get in: Head a couple of doors north of the main entrance, and up the stairs.

Mezcalería Tobalá – East Austin

How to get in: Just head up the staircase in Whisler’s!

Red Room Lounge – Downtown

How to get in: Keep an eye out for a door marked with a small crimson light bulb hanging under the awning. (If it’s illuminated, it’s open.) While it might sound counterintuitive, that red light is your green light for a good time.

Bar Illegal – Rainey Street

How to get in: Head to the backyard at Clive.

The Secret Bar in the W – Downtown

How to get in: Enter through the Records Room in the W’s Living Room Bar, and congratulate yourself. You’ve officially gone down the rabbit hole.
