Portoferraio was chosen by Napoleon as capital of the island and his place of residence. Arriving by the sea, it appears to be a bay, protected from pirates by its bastions which provide an intimate shelter from the sea. Elba is an amazing place to discover….lovely shops (wonderful linen goods), small ristorantes, dazzling colored flowers and plenty of Italian date palm trees full of ripening, glistening fruit just ready to fall, line the streets.
