Happy Flag Day June 14, 2016 ~ Things to know about our American flag

The flag of the United States of America is often referred to as the American Flag. It consists of thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red alternating with white, with a blue triangle in the canton bearing fifty small white, five pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows of six stars alternating with rows of five stars.

The 50 stars represent the 50 states of the United States of America, and the 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain, and became the first states in the US.

There are several nicknames for the flag such as “The Stars and Stripes”, “Old Glory” and the “Star-Spangles Banner.”

Francis Hopkinson of New Jersey designed the flag. He was a naval flag designer and signer of the Declaration of Independence.

White signifies purity and innocence; Red, hardiness & valor and Blue signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice.

The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.

To place the flag at half staff, hoist it to the peak for an instant and lower it to a position halfway between the top and bottom of the staff. The flag is to be raised again to the peak for a moment before it is lowered.
