The Old School was originally the Austin Cotton Exchange with cotton bales on the main floor and offices on the second floor. Later it was a market for dry goods, groceries, clothing and more. Today, it’s home to the best food on Sixth St. in Austin. The patio is a huge 1500 sq. ft. patio that looks like something you would find in New Orleans. It overlooks the busiest corner in the historical 6th St. district of Austin and is famous for its view of the iconic Ritz Theater.
The Ritz was built n 1929 and was the first theater in Austin to be built specifically for the ‘talkies’! To preserve a piece of Austin’s musical heritage, the dance floor of the famous Armadillo World Headquarters has been fabricated into the east wall of the Old School. What makes this dance floor so special is those who have danced on it – Willie Nelson, ZZ Top, Janis Joplin, Frank Zappa and more! The second floor patio has its own fame, having most recently been used for bands in SXSW 2013.
There are misters for hot weather and gas lamps for dining at night.
For an appetizer, try the Mac-N-Cheese Wedge…a wedge of macaroni cooked with 5 Italian white cheeses and seasonings then drizzled with a creamy garlic cheese sauce. They are famous for their burgers – choose from the Stevie Ray: a premium burger ground fresh daily from 2 prime steak cuts; the Bevo: a premium burger topped with natural cheddar cheese and caramelized onions; or the Zilker Park: a premium burger topped with fresh guacamole, bacon, mayonnaise and pepper jack cheese.
