If our clouds actually part and the rain stops I’ve got a great adventure for you Foodies to enjoy close to Austin! Make a day of it and visit one of the attractions close that would be fun to explore. Sunday looks like a good day but if not, pick a day next week or plan for next week-end!

Apis opened earlier this year on 6 acres in Spicewood, TX backing up to the Pedernales River. Apis is one of the top 10 restaurants in the Greater Austin area. It’s a contemporary TX restaurant with a feeling of understated elegance. The interior is colored in Hill Country sage and brown with light fixtures that look like honeycombs. In case you’re wondering ‘Apiary’ is the scientific name for the honeybee and there are about 2 dozen hives on the property that are used in restaurant dishes like their amazing honey bun or the honey vinaigrette glaze on their lacquered duck. The name was also chosen because owner, Taylor Hall, realized the importance of the bee’s role in the cycle on nature.
There are Asian influences on the menu like the appetizer of King Salmon tartare in yuzu with cucumbers and pickled almonds with salmon roe and smooth yogurt. Some other items you’ll find on the menu: an appetizer of white Austrian asparagus the come with beef poached maritake mushrooms drizzled and dusted with coffee emulsion, maitake powder and asparagus foam. There’s a lamb dish that comes with vadouvan yogurt and garlic hummus with a spicy sweet pistachio crusted merquez sausage and a fried pastry wrapped shoulder on a chickpea cake.
Honey is also present in their cocktails like the Apiary with honey-infused bourbon, lemon, sarsaparilla and dry curacao or the Queens Nectar with prosecco, Amaro Averna, greaefruit and honey syrup. Don’t forget the desserts like the rum soaked raisins and pecans that stick to the surface of that honey bun that’s topped with horchata ice cream.
Apis is located about 30 miles from downtown Austin in our beautiful Texas Hill Country off Hwy 71. Since it might be a little far for dinner, how about making a day of it and spend some time at one of the neighboring attractions:
Krause Springs – swim in the spring fed manmade pools and swimming hole on a 115 acre property that is listed on the National Register of Historical Places (8 miles from Apis)
Pace Bend Park – swimming, camping, boating and amazing views (8 miles from Apis)
Cypress Valley Canopy Tours – fly among the treetops and you can even spend the night in a stunning treehouse that will have you feeling like a modern day Swiss Family Robinson (3 miles from Apis). Check out fun in this Cypress Valley video:
