Spot light on Laiose Matsumoto~ Canyon Creek NW Austin 78726

We are so fortunate to have dedicated young people living in the Canyon Creek Subdivision in NW Austin! We don’t hear enough about our young adults amazing achievements. These are the leaders of tomorrow and I’m proud of their endeavors. The spotlight shines on this amazing young lady!

Laoise (pronounced Lee-sha) Matsumoto started synchronized swimming when she was 8 years old. She was already involved in many activities at the age of 8; she’d been dancing for 6 years (since she was 2), playing violin for 5 1/2 years (since she was 3 1/2), and swam recreationally for a few years. When Laoise found that her Japanese dance teacher was moving out of town and she would have one free day in a week and decided to give “sport” a try. After considering several sports including soccer and figure skating, she chose synchronized swimming because one of her friends was already participating in it and recommended her to try.

Synchronized swimming is a sport which combines swimming, dance, gymnastics, music, and possibly cheer leading. Laoise and her family thought it would be the best fit for her because she can use her musical experience and dance skills, learn to be a better swimmer, and be physically active with less risk of injuries. With her music, dance, and swimming background, Laoise was a natural in synchronized swimming. In about two years, she started to participate in national level competitions with her team. In 2015, Laoise ranked 11th as a soloist in the 12 and under age group at National Junior Olympics. Wow, I’m impressed, how about you?

When Laoise found out that Coach Alicia Dayli Ranucci who choreographed her nationally ranked solo was going to start a new team, she knew it was the right decision to join the team. Coach Ranucci has an extensive experience internationally as a synchronized swimmer and was a member of Mexico’s 2004 Olympic Synchronized Swimming team. She also has experience as a collegiate level coach, and swam as one of the mermaids in the movie, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” Several parents banded together and helped the coach start a new team: “North Austin Rivermaids” trying to promote this incredible sport in the north Austin area where no synchro team existed. Soon after the team was established, some of the swimmers who respected the coach’s skills and styles also transferred to Rivermaids.

Since this North Austin Rivermaids first year, the team faced many challenges including finding deep pools for practices. Even under these difficult situations, the 16-17 age group (which is where Laoise swims) managed to qualify for 2016 Junior Olympics! They are going to complete nationally at Junior Olympics in Long Island, NY in late June – early July. How cool is that?? Way to go NW Austin Rivermaids!!

Synchronized swimming is a sport which improves fitness, coordination, strength, endurance, and flexibility as well as develops confidence, dedication, commitment, teamwork, leadership, and problem solving skills. North Austin Rivermaids coaches and swimmers dream is to promote this wonderful sport to as many people as possible especially in this area of the town.

Let’s make a difference and help this NW Austin Rivermaids team reach their goals. They have a limited budget to send their team to the Junior Nationals so need your help to raise finds by donating (any amount you can) to their Go Fund me account! Come on folks, open your wallets! Let’s help this team make a difference at the Junior National meet in Long Island NY.
