Austin City Council fights to preserve Austin’s "Weird" culture

There are many articles out lately about Texas fighting to keep its “Texas Proud” culture and image with all the transplants moving to our state because of our explosive job growth. Our Austin City Council is awake to some of the radical changes many new transplants wish to make.

The policies and programs they are implementing are aimed at preserving our unique culture! We value our artistry, live music and local independent business. Don’t get me wrong they are not just now executing these initiatives they have been around longer than our Keep Austin Weird slogan.

“Weird” has become so ingrained in the DNA of Austin it’s found in the glossary of terms of the city’s comprehensive plan from 4 years ago! The official planning document defines the word: “strikingly odd” or “unusual”.

I love the article from our local Community Impact (far better than our local paper, but that is another post) on their take on how Austin is trying to retain their uniqueness while addressing the concerns of our ever growing affordability crisis which is affecting Austin’s creative workers disproportionately.

Our Keep Austin Weird  blueprint is one many cities are trying to follow and with good reason. Our drive to support local business, artists and retain our “Texas Pride” is what is luring companies and their employees to live and work in an environment that cares about its residents.

The New York Times wrote a compelling article on “Texas Pride” and what our state means to us. Another recent article “What makes Texas Texas” spells out the strong nationalism felt by Texans. We are not going to lose our Texas heritage and all things Texan. We welcome ya’ll with open arms but remember “Don’t mess with Texas!!” You don’t just move to Texas….it moves into you!
