Have you ever thought about the difference between a clinger and a climber?
An English or Boston ivy is a clinger. They attach onto a building or even a tree and make their way up at lightning speed. Their grappling hooks are like tiny suction cups on stems and they can scamper up an astonishing 50 feet or so. They are reckless in their adventure if not tamed along the way and are always in a hurry to make their way up…up…up. They are not showy and often aren’t noticed until they have taken over and then it’s hard to get rid of them.
An example of a climber is Clematis. They wrap their leaf stems around a 
support. They don’t have anything to pull themselves up with so require chicken wire or even thick fishing line to help make their journey up. They will fall in a heap at the base of whatever they are climbing (a mailbox or light post) if they don’t have support. Climbers are safety conscious and not in need of immediate gratification. They wrap and curl with a dedicated success in a timely manner and flourish with fertilizer, good sun and nurturing. They are often admired and appreciated.
I like to think of myself as a climber. I thrive with a good support system and like to feel appreciated. I know my success is well earned and hasn’t evolved over night. As Zig Ziglar said:
“Don’t become a wondering generality. Be a meaningful specific.”
