It’s hard to believe back in the late 1980’s the Blanton Company started development of the NW Austin community called Canyon Creek (zip code 78726); located off Hwy 620 about halfway between Hwy 2222 and Anderson Mill Rd. For those of you who remember, this area had been ranch and hunting property. Perry Blanton envisioned a master planned community with parks, pools and hike & bike trails and it became a reality…thank you, Perry!
The neighborhood expanded rapidly during the 1990’s because of its proximity to Lake Travis, Lake Austin, major roads and highways, employers, shopping and its falling into the acclaimed RRISD boundaries. With the continued expansion into the 2000’s a few sections of Canyon Creek found itself crossing into the highly respected LISD boundaries. If you are wondering if the boundary lines will change the answer is no.
By 2005, Canyon Creek was almost built out with approximately 1300 homes plus a gated section “The Enclave” of 43 white stone single family homes (developed by Standard Pacific Homes). A little bit later, David Weekley Homes developed a small section called “Canyon Creek West.” In 2011, David Weekley started construction of 53 homes in a gated section called “The Villas of Canyon Creek.”
You access Canyon Creek off Boulder Lane. Boulder is a loop and crosses Hwy 620 in two spots. It winds its way through the picturesque, upper middle class neighborhood of single family homes ranging from mid $300,000 to mid $500,000.
A good deal of the neighborhood is surrounded by the Balcones Canyonland Preserve. The Canyon Creek Elementary was constructed in the late 1990’s and was elevated to exemplary status in its first year. There are two parks located within Canyon Creek~Trail Head Park and Canyon Creek Park. Ownership of Trail Head Park transferred to the City of Austin upon dissolution of the Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District #1 in February 2010 (it was an 8 year court battle with the City of Austin but Canyon Creek prevailed).
Canyon Creek has the distinction as one of Austin’s “Green” neighborhoods on The City Council of Austin website as the result of Canyon Creek participating in the “Green Challenge” in 2009.
Kudos to the Canyon Creek Subdivision for evolving into NW Austin’s premier master planned community. So many wonderful events with strong neighborhood involvement: Cyclones Swim Team events, Back to School Party, Fall Festival, Tree Lighting Ceremony and don’t forget the Canyon Creek Mom’s Group! If you’re looking for a community where neighbors are friends, streets are safe and the nights are quiet…you have found home!
