Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center ~ A must see in Austin

In 1982 Lady Bird Johnson (our former first lady) and actress Helen Hayes founded The National Wildflower Research Center which later was renamed the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. The goal has been to protect and preserve North America’s native plants and natural landscapes.

In 2006 the Center became an Organized Research Unit of the University of Texas at Austin and has become one of the country’s most credible research institutions and effective advocates for native plants. Lady Bird’s vision has become a reality because every day the Wildflower Research Center introduces people to the beauty and diversity of wildflowers and other native plants in the public gardens, its woodlands and sweeping meadows.

Mrs. Johnson recognized our country was losing its natural landscapes natural beauty and vowed to do something about it. The Wildflower Center was intended to help preserve and restore that beauty, and the biological richness of North America.

Visitors from all over come to visit the garden’s display of native plants of the Central Texas Hill Country, South and West Texas. The Center’s education programs for children and adults teach people about their natural surroundings and how to grow native plants in their own backyards. The Plant conservation Program protects the ecological heritage of Texas by conserving it’s rare and endangered flora. Check out the database of more than 7,200 native species available online: Native Plant Information Network .

Many major highways in Austin are lined with gorgeous bluebonnets in the spring thanks to Lady Birds insistence of beautifying our landscapes.

There’s always something going on at the Wildflower Center such as seminars, sales and special events.
