Have You Ever Thought About Getting A Real Job?

Have you ever thought about getting a real job? I’ve been asked this question more than once but, never from someone that used to be a real estate agent. There’s a first time for everything and over the holidays it came from someone who used to be an agent. At a holiday party I was making polite conversation and with that came asking this particular lady what she does for a living and vice versa. Right now she works part time as a receptionist and noted that it’s just a job but, it was her past that struck a chord with me.

She used to be an agent but, realized that then she needed to get a “real job” and asked if I’d ever thought about getting one too. I can be am a smart ass and told her that no I hadn’t because I prefer my real career in real estate and that I’d never get a job again. She looked perplexed and that led to a far more interesting conversation about the difference in a job and a career.

Let’s Compare A Job vs. A Career:

Job vs. Career

Real estate isn’t for everyone – not even close. She left the industry with the feeling that no one can make a “real” living in real estate. The more we talked the more I understood why she felt that way. She felt that real estate had wronged her because she went to the office Monday through Friday but, in 3 years only sold 3 houses. You don’t get paid to show up in real estate. Heck, sometimes you show up for months, do everything you possibly can and guess what? You don’t get paid. It wasn’t real estate the wronged her, it was a slew of factors that caused it to not work but, that’s a post for another time.

Real estate is my career, my passion, and my calling. I would never be satisfied to have a job again. A career takes years to build and you have to constantly improve your skills and adapt to continue to be the best at what you do no matter what industry you’re in. Anyone who has or has had a career whether it be as a real estate agent, doctor, nurse, lawyer, florist, hair stylist, singer, actor or anything else you can think of knows that you spend a lifetime working on your craft. It’s who you are and far more than just something you do to earn money.
