Monger’s Kitchen + Market ~ "Foodie" Friday 1-1-16

Happy 2016! Hope your holiday was all you hoped it would be. Are you wishing for a meal of fresh, seasonal Gulf fish and shrimp, but, not eager to make that trip to the Texas coast?  You only need to go as far as 2401 E. Cesar Chavez to the East Side’s first seafood restaurant and market to enjoy the best there is.

MONGER’S KITCHEN + MARKET       http://www.mongersaustin.com/

Mongers Market + Kitchen showcases classic seafood dishes and combines them with a retail market that highlights freshly caught Texas Gulf shrimp and fish. All in an atmosphere that is reminiscent of afternoons spent on the beach.  At the front of the restaurant is a display case and raw bar that sells a small but fresh selection of seafood you can take home.  You can purchase gumbo, house smoked fish dip, shrimp cocktail, oysters Rockefeller and more.  There is plenty of charm to go around with the nautical white-washed walls and touches of  seashells, driftwood and splashes of turquoise that will bring thoughts of ocean breezes and glowing sunsets.  However, it’s the food that will keep you coming back to Mongers.  A highlight is their Ceviche with cubes of sweet fresh yellowfin tuna that is tossed with kabosu, ginger and sesame;  scoop that onto one of their crispy house-made salt and vinegar potato chips and you’ll understand why it’s one of the tastiest treats around.  On the appetizer menu you’ll find BBQ Gulf Shrimp with charred lemon and tasso.  Another choice might be the “Angels on Horseback” – crispy oysters, pork rillette, raisin rhubarb with pecan crème fraiche.  For the main course you might like to try Barnegat Scallops (from Barnegat Bay, NJ) with arugula, almond pesto, braised fennel and grapefruit.  Or, the Gulf Red Snapper with spring peas, morels, chervil cream and pea greens salad.  Maybe you might just like a sandwich…there’s the Fish BLT with smoked bacon, chili aioli, heirloom tomatoes and butter lettuce….The Crab Cake “Sammy” with fried green tomatoes, tartar sauce and apple-jalapeno slaw and The Short Rib with blue cheese, caramelized spring onion and arugula.

Watch this video and hear what Shane Stark, owner & chef of Mongers, has to say about his restaurant; and how he and fish monger Roberto San Miguel drive to the coast twice a week to make sure their fish is as fresh as possible:
