Next week is Thanksgiving and many of you have guests coming into town to help you celebrate. Why not try something different? Never hurts to be adventuresome and show off some unique restaurants in Austin! This restaurant at 307 E. 5th St. in downtown Austin might just fit the bill. It’s the only one of its kind in Austin.

The Russian House is an entirely genuine Russian Restaurant in Austin. There are traces of the USSR evident in their authentic décor specially selected in Russia. When you walk thru the door, don’t be in a hurry to sit and eat. They want you to roam, look at their walls and view all they have on display. They even have a large bear called Misha to greet you at the door. Try on some of the Russian clothing they have there and have your photo taken with Misha. The main dining area (and the private rooms) are styled to look like an apartment of a Moscow citizen in the early 20th century. Each room is made in its original design of the Russian or Eastern style. If you’re sitting at the bar and patio, look up – you’ll see a ceiling painted in the style of Khokloma (the name of a Russian wood painting handicraft style and national ornament, known for its vivid flower patterns, red and gold colors over a black background); and a map of the Soviet Union is painted over the bar top. Frequently there is also live Russian and Balkan style music.
At the Russian House, you’ll find authentic dishes that are prepared by their award-winning executive chef, Vladimir Gribknov. They also serve Russian and European beers and have a full bar menu which includes over 100 house-infused Russian vodkas and a large selection of Russian and European Vodkas. Here is a sampling of what you’ll find on the menu: For starters, how about some Sturgeon Caviar Malossol – sturgeon black caviar, a luxury delicacy that consists of processed, salted, non-fertilized sturgeon roe. Or start your evening with some Eggplant Rolls – grilled eggplant slices rolled and stuffed with cheese, mushrooms and tomatoes. For an entrée, there is the Hunter’s Plate – a platter of smoked chicken half, salo, pork ribs and kolbasa that is served with grilled and fresh vegetables. Also on the entrée menu is Beef Stroganoff with beef, mushrooms, sour cream and truffle cream served with mashed potatoes, pasta or buckwheat. For a dessert, try a Baked Apple filled with cottage cheese, honey, pecans and prunes. You might also like a slice of Kiev Cake – one of the famous desserts served in the Soviet Union that is a specialty of Kiev and the Ukraine. In fact, in Kiev City, this cake has become one of their symbols. It consists of layers of meringue, butter cream filling and nuts.
